The Barbados Workers’ Union has been instrumental in championing the establishment and enhancement of the national minimum wage, a cornerstone in protecting low-income earners.

In 2021, BWU's advocacy during the G4S dispute catalysed the introduction of the national minimum wage, addressing wage disparities and ensuring fair compensation for security personnel.

Building on this foundation, Minister of Labour Colin Jordan announced at the BWU's May Day Family Fun Day in 2025 that the national minimum wage would increase from $8.50 to $10.50 per hour, effective 1st June. Additionally, a sectoral minimum wage of $11.40 per hour was established for security guards.

This progression underscores BWU's pivotal role in advocating for equitable wages, ensuring that workers receive compensation reflective of their contributions and the rising cost of living.
